ALBUM REVIEW TIME :)
#100 Leonard Cohen - “Ten New Songs”
In listening to This album, I let Leonard Cohen whisper growl his “Ten New Songs” to me. In true Leonard Cohen fashion, the beauty and fluidity of his poetry set to music left little to be desired by way of lyrical originality and artistry. The instrumental aspect of just about every song in this album was clearly second to the words as Cohen seemed to have a message running through the album of decline, leaving and being lost with titles such as “Alexandra Leaving” and “You Have Loved Enough.” The ninth track, however, titled “Back on Boogie Street” seemed to be set as a reminder that, by this album, (the first since 1992) Cohen is back and true to form this album features the abilities of another collaborative artist by the name of Sharon Robinson. Robinson is credited as co-writer as well as being credited with arranging, programming and performing the tracks. The last song of the album was by far my favorite. “The Land of Plenty” delivers lyrical masterpieces such as “let the light in the land of plenty/Shine on the truth someday.” Through the beauty of those words Cohen expresses his concern and notorious disapproval of a consumer driven society, while providing a prayer like hope that the light of truth will one day shine on the land of plenty (or excess in my opinion). I think, for this album to thoroughly be appreciate and enjoyed it would be beneficial to the listener to be in a contemplative, societally critical or maybe reflective mood. Though I was not in any of these moods upon first listening to this album, I still greatly enjoyed it and it will defiantly not be the last time I visit this album.
Q: Why didn’t Caleb stroll down Robertson Street when I was in LA?!
A: Because he wanted to keep that shirt intact ;)
